About Us

The Association of South West Mediators (ASWM) is a group of independent mediators based in the South West of England. It is a not-for-profit organisation providing mediation, mediation training and conflict resolution services throughout the South West of England in all the towns and cities in Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, Dorset, Wiltshire, Somerset and Hampshire.

Many of our mediators travel further afield and operate in Greater London, the Midlands, the Wales Border Counties, the North of England and South Wales.

By supporting our professional mediators we provide services to law firms, individual lawyers, in-house lawyers, local government lawyers and other departments, as well as to members of the public.

The Association is a member of the Civil Mediation Council (“CMC”). The Association's Panel of Civil/Commercial Mediators is accredited by the CMC as a mediation provider.

Forming of ASWM

The Association of South West Mediators was formed following an initial interest meeting held in Plymouth in early 2006. From that meeting, it emerged that there was a strong desire for a regional association to provide support for mediators in the South West, to provide a portal through which mediation work could be garnered and to generally raise the profile of mediation.

What further emerged was the wide range of areas in which mediation was being used as a tool for resolving disputes.

There was a sense that in some areas there were a limited number of individuals working in a vacuum who were keen to become part of a broader association.

A steering group was formed which worked throughout 2006 to further refine the aims and objectives of the Association and to put in place an appropriate structure. The Association was formally launched at its inaugural AGM held in Exeter in early March 2007.

Although based in the South West we also cover large cities outside the South West such as London, Birmingham and the Midlands.
