Iain Christie

For ten years Iain was a legal adviser in HM Diplomatic Service in which capacity he regularly negotiated on behalf of the UK at the United Nations and Council of Europe. This high level international experience equips him well for complex and multi-party mediations but he is equally adept whatever is at stake for the parties. After 17 years at the media and information law chambers, 5RB, Iain is now an Associate Member of 4-5 Gray’s Inn Square. He is co-editor of Tugendhat and Christie: The Law of Privacy and the Media (OUP) and a contributor to Blackstone’s Guide to the Defamation Act 2013 (OUP).

Since his accreditation as a civil and commercial mediator in 2004 by Regent’s University, Iain has mediated in over 100 disputes in a wide range of areas. He was accredited as a family mediator by ADR Group in 2009 and as a workplace mediator by Globis Ltd in 2010. This combination of expertise allows him to deploy the most effective techniques to resolve any dispute and he is able to adapt the process to meet the needs of the parties. He has completed a one year Diploma training in Conflict Resolution, Group Facilitation and Counselling Skills and is an accredited Imago Professional Facilitator and Certified Daring Way Facilitator. In 2011 Iain trained as an actor at Drama Studio London and now combines his mediation and facilitation practice with coaching and performance as a professional actor.

Iain is Secretary of the Civil Mediation Council, Vice-Chair of the Bar Council ADR Panel and a Bencher of the Inner Temple. He is a member of the Family Mediators Association, the Standing Conference of Mediation Advocates and the Association of Mediation Assessors, Trainers and Instructors. He is also a Board member of IMPRESS, the Independent Monitor for the Press. He provides mediation services through a number of organisations and can be instructed directly.  He is a keen advocate of the benefits of mediation and has taken part in an episode of Clive Anderson’s Radio 4 programme Unreliable Evidence, which can be heard again by clicking here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00pg5d3
